"What scares me is the energy consumption if you're using ChatGPT [for simple queries]," Caroline Hargrove said during an "IOT: Powering the Digital Economy" panel on the new energy landscape. Hargrove is CTO of Ceres Power, a developer of clean energy technology, including electrolysers for green hydrogen. An International Energy Agency report, published in January, highlighted that on average a typical Google search uses 0.3 watt-hours of electricity versus 2.9 watt-hours for a ChatGPT request. Hargrove said if this consumption was not managed properly "then the perverse effect could happen that we use so much more energy."

The firm pointed to recent data from the International Energy Agency, which forecasted that electricity consumption from data centers, artificial intelligence and the cryptocurrency sector could double by 2026. "The latest IEA electricity forecasts paint an even more alarming outlook for data center consumption," analyst Hiral Patel wrote in a Monday note. Barclays said it is looking at three investment areas that are a key part of the trend: data center operators, data center suppliers and data center grid infrastructure builders. After successfully using lithium-ion batteries at a Dublin data center , Microsoft wants to expand grid-interactive battery storage in other areas. Power demand from generative AI will soar from 46 terawatt hours to 224 TWH between this year and 2027, according to the firm's base case scenario. That's equivalent to more than 75% of the total global data center power use in 2022, or close to Spain's entire power consumption in 2022, the firm said. "We believe the rapid power demand growth from GenAI is not well understood, and not priced into a number of stocks." While the IEA said more than $3 billion was invested in CCUS projects in 2022, only 5% of the ventures have reached final investment decisions, representing only 10 million metric tons of carbon capture and 20 million of storage. TotalEnergies on Thursday posted a 35% fall in third quarter adjusted net income from last year's record high, hurt by a drop in energy prices, but maintained its share buyback operation as conflicts push oil prices back up. The French energy company's adjusted net income stood at $6.5 billion, down from the year-earlier $10 billion but just beating an analyst forecast of $6.4 billion, according to a consensus established from LSEG data. Second quarter adjusted net income was $5 billion. Profits were buoyed by the company's increase in renewable capacity and integration as well as persistently high oil prices, despite crude falling from a decade-plus high last year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Oil prices remained buoyant at around $90 per barrel at the beginning of the fourth quarter, it said.
